Getting a Class 7N (Novice License) in British Columbia

The Class 7N license, also known as the Novice License, is an important stage in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) in British Columbia. It is the second step after obtaining your Class 7 Learner’s License and brings you closer to becoming a fully licensed driver.

What is a Class 7N License?

A Class 7N license allows new drivers to gain more independent driving experience while still following certain restrictions. It is designed to help drivers build confidence and improve their skills before obtaining a full Class 5 license.

How to Get a Class 7N License

To qualify for a Class 7N license, you must:

  • Hold a valid Class 7 Learner’s License (L)
  • Pass the Class 7 road test
  • Demonstrate safe and responsible driving skills during the test

Once you successfully pass the road test, you will be issued a Class 7N license.

Restrictions of a Class 7N License

While holding a Class 7N license, drivers must follow certain rules, including:

  • Displaying an “N” sign on the vehicle
  • Limiting passengers (usually one non-family passenger unless supervised)
  • Maintaining a zero blood alcohol level
  • Avoiding distracted driving (including mobile phone use)

These restrictions are in place to help reduce risk and build safe driving habits.

How Long is the N Stage?

Drivers must hold the Class 7N license for a minimum period (typically 24 months) before they can take the final road test for a Class 5 license. Safe driving practice and clean driving records may reduce this time in some cases.

Moving to Class 5 License

After completing the N stage, drivers can take the final road test to obtain a full Class 5 driver’s license, which allows unrestricted driving in British Columbia.
